Saint of the Day ~ March 11

SAINT AUREA (SANTA ORIA) of SAN MILLÁN (c.1042-c.1069), virgin and religious

Today, the Church honors Saint Aurea, a young woman who felt a great love for her Christian faith, and devoted her brief life to one of sanctity and service to her religious community and those who sought her assistance for personal advice and prayer.

Aurea was born about the year 1042 in the village of Villavelayo, Spain, in a region which had earlier been invaded by the Moors, and she was raised under Moorish [Muslim] control. In spite of this, she felt drawn to the Sacred Scriptures, meditating on and studying them from an early age.

Aurea also had an unquenchable love for the saints – reading and studying the lives of the early martyrs of the Church. She was particularly fond of Saints Agatha, Eulalia of Mérida, and Cecilia, whose lives she attempted to emulate with her own.

As a young woman, Aurea decided to leave home and join a religious convent. She was welcomed into the convent of San Millán de la Cogolla and completely applied herself to the monastic life. Soon after joining the convent, it was reported that Aurea received a vision of her three favorite saints, who encouraged her to follow her chosen lifestyle with more zeal.

She deepened her faith and recommitted herself to her ascetic life, discussing the visions with her spiritual director, but praying not to fall victim to pride in their occurrence. Despite her humility, word of her visions spread, and she became sought after for advice and prayer. Many miracles were claimed through her prayerful intercession to God.

Sister Aurea spent only a few years of her life in the monastery. About the year 1069, she contracted a painful disease and passed on to her eternal reward. The monks and religious of the community kept vigil over her body until her burial; and numerous miracles were reported as having been received while praying at her grave.

At the time of her death, Sister Aurea was twenty-seven years old.

We commemorate her feastday on March 11.

PRAYER

(The following prayer is from the Roman Breviary from the Commons for Virgins)

“Lord, hear the prayers of those who recall the devoted life of the virgin, Saint Aurea. Guide us on our way and help us to grow in love and devotion as long as we live.

“We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.”
